Keep a list before your mind of those who burned with anger and resentment about something, of even the most renowned for success, misfortune, evil deeds, or any special distinction. Then ask yourself, how did that work out? Smoke and dust, the stuff of simple myth trying to be legend … —Marcus Aurelius, MEDITATIONS, 12.27
- Our existence is finite. We didn't exist, then we exist for a little while, and then stop existing. Those who succeed or fail, the rich and the poor, the kings and the slaves, ultimately share the same fate. Many aspire to be remembered, to create a legacy, to attain a form of immortality. But it is futile, says Marcus, as what comes after we're gone is irrelevant.
- Past isn't anymore, and future isn't yet. Only present is. So we should live in the present, enjoy what we have, and live each moment to the fullest.
